Living Land - Episode 2: Dairy Farming

This episode features two ambitious, young lady farmers who are making their mark in dairy production. Our first stop is near Harrismith in the Free State at the relatively small Khayalame Farm of Nompi Zim.

Her family gave her 10 dairy cows when she was only 16 years old and in a remarkably short time she won a provincial prize as Best Emerging Farmer in her category. She has now progressed to the point where her cows are producing over 2 000 litres a day and she is serving as a mentor for other young up-and-coming dairy farmers. A short drive from Nompi’s farm, we visit one of her proteges who is starting out in this challenging industry. Masetjhaba Moloi is learning how to manage her late father’s dairy operation called the Mpiteleng Milk Project.

Although she is only producing 220 litres of milk per day, she has already secured a deal with multi-national food company Nestlé who buy her milk. Her aim is to produce 1 000 litres a day and she is now employing modern technology and best practices to achieve this goal
